April fools!

1 Apr

At work today, I was sitting in my cube minding my own business when I hear some crazy lady across the office scream and moan. It was actually kind of weird. Then, some sort of blame game ensued amongst that corner of the office and they were trying to figure out who did “it.” I wasn’t sure what “it” was, but about ten minutes later the crazy lady catty-corner to me started screaming and the person right next to me told her it was the person that sits across from me (I’m trying not to use names). So, I finally got off of my can to see what the big deal was. Apparently, this lady had placed a prosthetic leg under their desks so just the shoe part was sticking out and I guess this made it look like someone was laying under their desks. I’m not sure what’s so scary about that, but I guess it would be a little surprising. I asked the lady where she got it because it was like a real, good prosthetic, not something you buy at a gag store or whatever, but she didn’t answer me, which makes me very curious indeed. Anyway, at least someone’s in the spirit?

After work, I headed to the bus because I had to go to class. It was so freakin’ windy downtown that I was being pushed forward, my hood wouldn’t stay down and my hair was being tangled up in ratty knots. Have I ever mentioned how much I hate windy weather? More than any other weather, windy is by far the worst, especially when you just did your hair and put on fancy goobery lip gloss and then your hair ends up sticking to your lips and you look like one of those little kids that likes to chew on their hair until it’s a nasty old lump. I hate that. Plus, wind makes it colder and I hate when it’s cold to begin with. Anyway, that’s my grumpy rant for the day. Wind… I hate you.

Okay and one last random thought… when I was on campus heading to class, I saw a bunch of youngins playing “the beach volleyball” and it struck me that next year some of the freshman from OSU will be students that I taught during student teaching. I am feeling quite elderly.

It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood

30 Mar

Wow, it was super nice today and I know you can’t tell, but those two little trees were covered in buds! I can’t wait for warm weather. Work was busy today, but I guess that’s what happens when you are gone for two weeks. After work, I tried a new bus home, the #8. It was alright. So far, the #5 is the best. The #2 always has the crazy drunk guy that talks nonstop to no one in particular, so I like to avoid that one.

Tomorrow I have my first class of the quarter and it’s with a moderately scary/intimidating/semi-famous professor, so wish me luck. Also, Dan’s dad Pete retires from GE tomorrow after 42 years, so wish him luck too!

Wow

10 Mar

It was soooo nice today. It got up to 77 degrees at some point! I had to work on finals all morning and afternoon, but I did take a break for a short run. Then, I went to class, but was early, so I read outside for a bit (those are my new favorite shoes that I got from zappos).
Here’s Ramseyer in the afternoon prettiness…
And that’s one more class complete. Two to go!

Back to Work

9 Mar

This morning, it was work and then class. I had to give part of the final group presentation, so I was a little nervous, but it went okay. The good news was that it was the last class and it was a super nice day! The end.

Rainy Day Wednesday

11 Feb

I waited in the rain for the bus this morning. The bus ride was fine. Work was so boring I thought I would die. Then, I took the bus to school where some guy that smelled like alcohol quietly swore for half the ride. I didn’t realize I was holding my breath until he got off and I let out a huge sigh of relief. Oh, the bus. When I got off, I stepped on the curb, the bus pulled away and splashed water all over me. It was like a sitcom only not funny.

Class was alright, then I had to walk to the bus stop and the wind was going crazy. My umbrella kept turning inside out. I’m sure this also seemed funny… to other people. Now I’m cold and tired and ready for my mostly restful day tomorrow so I can get some work done. Night night!

Silly Ohio, February is not for Flip Flops

11 Feb

I remember when I was a kid and when it was March, it didn’t matter how cold it was, I wanted to wear shorts because March means spring and spring means shorts. I think most people in Ohio are ready for spring way before it gets here and today, we got a little taste of some spring-like weather. It was in the 50s and I saw more people in flip flops and shorts than I could count.

The nice thing about the warm weather was that people were out again. It reminded me why I like summer so much. People were out playing basketball, eating on the patios of restaurants and even just walking more leisurely. It makes me think one of two things… I either need to live somewhere warmer or I’m completely okay with global warming. I think I’ll take my car for a few extra trips around the block tomorrow. :)

We want our garage back.

29 Jan

The good news is that last night I finished up my reading for next week, so I can enjoy my weekend. This morning I wanted to go for a run. It’s obviously too messy out to run outside, so I wanted to go to the rec. Yesterday I didn’t go anywhere, so when I got to my car, it was still encased in ice. Ben told me the day before that it took him an hour to clean his car off, but I kinda didn’t believe him. But when I brushed the loose snow off, I couldn’t even break through the ice. I did get my door open, but even where the ice broke around the door, I couldn’t catch the edges to get any of it off, it was too thick. So, I sat in the car for a little, called Dan to complain, and then noticed that I could see a little water forming under the ice on my windshield, so I went out with the scraper and got a little of the ice off. Then, I proceeded with the whacking method (I love that method). I broke a few big chunks off the windshield and passenger/driver’s side windows, but the ice was so solid that after a few big whacks, I broke my dang scraper! It was a good scraper too and I liked it because it was purple.

Later, Dan and I went to Walmart to get a few things and went to the scraper aisle where all the normal scrapers were, of course, sold out. So, I ended up with this giant aluminum scraper. It’s about the size of a cane (which should be great for whacking). Dan found some de-icer so that he could clean off his car. When we got home he started cleaning off his car… and broke his windsheild wiper! Sheesh. I was so jealous of all those people driving around without 9 inch icicles hanging from their bumper… Fancy pantses.

Wintry Mix

28 Jan

Back in college, my roommate Gina (also studying to be a teacher) loved to hear the weather man say the words “wintry mix.” This always spelled disaster for the roads, but joy for teachers because school was canceled. The area schools are canceled here, but the big news is that Ohio State even canceled classes! Yesterday I asked a lady that is in charge of the computer labs if she thought we might get classes canceled. She said that in the ten years she’s been at Ohio State, they’ve only canceled classes once. Well, bust my buttons, this must be my lucky day. So, I decided to work from home today and I don’t have to go to class tonight. Ah, relief.

Rainy Day Monday

24 Nov

Finals week is after Thanksgiving, so yesterday, I worked on papers and then we tried the new-ish Mexican restaurant on High St. Here’s a familiar scene.

After dinner, I got into working on the presentation for one of my papers and ended up staying up until 1am. This is one of two times since we’ve been in Columbus that Dan has gone to bed before me. When the alarm clock went off this morning, I was tired and it was raining. I debated about riding the bus, but I’m still scared of it, and it wasn’t raining that hard, so I thought I could still ride my bike. I wanted to make sure my pants didn’t get wet, so I wore my long jacket, but it wasn’t waterproof, so I put my short rain jacket over top with the hood up and strapped down tight. I looked like an idiot and I was pretty wet when I got to work. Here’s the dreary view from the window.

But, I dried out in about a half an hour or so. And, I wasn’t in too bad of a mood because this is my last day of work for the week! Tomorrow, I have to teach in the morning, but then I’ll have all afternoon to work and then it’s off to Cincinnati for Thanksgiving. Yay!

Biking in a Winter Wonderland

17 Nov

I know it looks like I was trying to take a picture of that red tree (which is pretty), but I was really trying to take a picture of the snow. I swear it was snowing.

Do you remember in Forrest Gump, when he was in Vietnam and it was the rainy season and he said they had all kinds of rain… big ol’ fat rain, a little bit of stinging rain, rain that came in sideways and even rain that seemed to come up from underneath? Well, I had a little bit of that today, but with snow. I started my day with big ol’ fat snow. Those nice fluffly flakes that you can catch on your tongue and watch melt on the windshield. It was pretty, but as I started to pick up speed on my bike, one landed directly on my eyeball. It was so weird. It didn’t hurt or anything and it melted right away of course, but it was a strange feeling indeed. The other thing about big ol’ fat snow is that it’s also wet, so my hat and gloves were also a little wet by the time I got to work. It wasn’t too cold though, so I’m not complaining.

Work was pretty good, I got a lot done, and I had to leave a little early because I had a meeting with my advisor. So, I went home for a quick bite to eat, then headed up to campus. On the way home from work, it had gotten a little colder, so the snow turned from big ol’ fat snow to… um, kosher salt snow? Anyway, it was harder, but small and collected in the creases of my coat. But, then after lunch, on my way to campus, it was still cold, but the snow was more like BB gun snow. Bigger, harder, and as I picked up speed, hitting me pretty hard in the face. As soon as I got to Ramseyer Hall, I called Dan and asked him to pick me up after class because I couldn’t ride back in that, but by the time I was done with my meeting and class, it had stopped snowing and it was even all melted. Oh, and on a side note, my advisor paid me a compliment today at our meeting, which made me feel cheery even though I had just been pelted in the face by BB gun snow. Yay!

Then, Dan and I watched Kung Fu Panda and the Browns game. The end.
