HP 6

This is my step-nephew, Judah.  He loves Harry Potter too, and he’ll pinch you if you don’t like him!

Expelliarmus!
Expelliarmus!

Yesterday was a long day.  I worked from 6am-2:30pm, then had class from 3:30-7:18pm, then I came home and ran and showered.  Even though I was tired, I was also too excited to wait to see the new Harry Potter movie.  It’s really everyone on facebook’s fault for being all “Harry Potter was awesome!” and “Going to see Harry tonight!”  I got jealous and felt like a little kid that just couldn’t make myself wait.  So, we decided to go to the 9:45 show.  We got there at 9:15 and it was sold out, so we had to go to the 10:20 show, which was fine, but the movie is 2 and a half hours long, which put us home at about 1 in the morning.

Spoiler alert:  It depends on how much you care, but you might not want to hear what I thought of the movie.

I loved the movie, but I think it’s hard when you have read all the books, and sort of fallen in love with the characters, not to love seeing the story play out on screen.  I thought the movie was well done, interesting, funny, and made sense.  They added in some humor that I don’t think was in the book (I read it a long time ago), but it worked for me.  What I thought they left out was how very scary that year at Hogwarts was supposed to be.  It was terrifying to go out, everyone was afraid, and I think the funny stuff sort of downplayed that part of the story (which was really important).  Also, Dan and I both thought that the story seemed really “simple.”  They had some parts condensed a little, which makes sense for the movie, but makes the story seem less complex.

I thought Ron was really funny and I loved, loved Luna (that lion hat was awesome!), but her character was sort of left out too.  I forgot that the burrow burned in this one and that made me pretty sad (because I want to live there when I grow up).  The scene in the cave at the end was exactly how I pictured it.  But, I thought Dumbledore’s funeral type thing was a little lame.  And, I swear there was a huge fight scene at the end?  No?  Didn’t Fred or George get an ear blown off and didn’t people die?  Ah, I need to go read the book again, but really, aren’t the books always better?

And, how long am I going to have to wait for the next one??  It better not be this long again!

I really should stop my habit of re-reading the books right before the movie comes out, because I’m always a little disappointed. I always have to ask my friends that only watch the movies to figure out if it was actually good or not!

Since I just finished re-reading the book for the third (at least) time on Monday, I think I can answer some of your hp questions :) The burrow was never attacked in the book, and I was a little confused why they added the scene, since they had to cut so much. I was looking forward to the major fight at the end, where Bill is attacked by a warewolf and a death eater dies, but they completely left it out! It could have been the best scene! I thought that they made the “is Snape a good guy or a bad guy” way too obvious. In the book we are left completely hating Snape, and I feel this movie kind of gave too much away. Where was Fleur? A major part of the next movie should be the wedding of Bill and Fleur, but they don’t even mention they are dating. I’m not sure how they’re going to get everyone up to date on that one and I don’t see how they can leave that scene out of hp 7.1.

I completely agree that they made the movie too “simple” and childlike. I was a little concerned when I saw that it was rated PG, instead of PG-13 like Phoenix. Overall I enjoyed the movie (but let’s face it, I love anything Harry-related) but I think they could have done much better. I’ll step off my high horse now ;)

OMFG like everything you said I thought! I SWEAR that it was this one where George got his ear blown off, but I guess that’s the last book, and also where Fred dies. I liked how they focused on the love stories…but that’s all they seemed to do. Like, okay here are some teenagers with love problems, and oh ya, one of them has this scar thing because this guy wanted to kill him but couldn’t so now it’s his life mission to. Forgot about that. The cave scene was SOOOO GOOD! I’m glad they didn’t ruin it too much because it was such a big part. And BTW the way Dumbledore died…blahhhhh. Wasn’t Harry stupefied and hidden under the invisible blanket or something? And where were Molly, Arthur, Tonks, Lupin and the Twins?! How come they didn’t get more face-time?!

I really need to re-read this book. It’s killing me. Oh, and Ron Weasley is my king :)

Well, if I would have remembered all of that, my blog post would probably have been a little more negative. I wonder how they are going to make up for all of these inconsistencies in the next movie…
